History of the Nika Awards

The Nika Prize was awarded for the first time in 1987 by the Secretariat of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR. The founder of the awards was Russian actor and film director Yuliy Gusman.

The award was awarded on the basis of a democratic vote in which all members of the Union of Cinematographers had the right to participate. Since the 1990s, the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts have determined the award winners by secret ballot, including representatives of all film specialties, delegated by the regional branches of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia.

Currently the Russian Academy of Motion Picture Arts has 621 active members.

Nika Awards statuette

The Nika Awards trophy was created by Russian sculptor Sergey Mikulsky. There were other options for the name such as "Wings of the Soviets", but they decided to choose the name of the heroine of the film "When the storks pass" (Летят журавли) by director Mikhail Kalatózov. The Trofeso consists of a figure made in bronze with gold covers of a woman with wings, representing the Greek winged Goddess "Nike".
