History

The first Gotham Awards ceremony was held in 1991, at the initiative of the Independent Feature Project (IFP) founded in 1979, to honor independent films made mainly in the northeast region of the United States.

In 2004 the scope of the awards was expanded, allowing the inclusion of international films.

The name of the awards "Gotham" comes from the nickname that the American writer Washington Irving gave New York City in 1807 in Salmagundia magazine.
